Born in Otley, into a musical family, Joanne Dexter won a scholarship to study at “The Scottish Conservatoire” where she won many Competitions and Awards. She then studied Italian at L’Universita di Stranieri (Perugia).
As a highly successful professional Soprano in Opera and Concert Platform Joanne has worked for all the major Opera Companies in the UK and abroad in France, Germany, Spain and also with a touring company in Japan.
During this time she has worked with leading Conductors and Directors such as Richard Hickox,, Richard Farnes, David Parry, Martin Andre, Paul Daniel, Wyn Davies, John Pryce Jones, Martin Pickard, David McVicar, Dietfried Bernet etc.
Joanne’s. Opera credits are extensive, thanks in part to fruitful spells as a soloist with Opera North, English Touring Opera and Pavilion Opera. Operatic Roles include Musetta (ETO), The Woodbird (Opera North, the Sage), Pamina and Papagena (Pavilion), Papagena (Opera North), Lisette (Rondine), First Lady (Idomeneo), Noble Orphan(Rosenkavalier), Shepherd Boy (Tosca), Carolina (Secret Marriage), Karolka (Jenufa), Niece (Peter Grimes), Barbarina (The Marriage of Figaro) – all with Opera North, and Helene (Une Education Manquee) Covent Garden.
Joanne joined the Opera North Chorus in 2005.
Joanne’s first love however was Oratorio and as a concert platform soloist she has performed with major choral societies throughout the Uk, most notably Messiah (Huddersfield Choral), Messiah (Halifax Choral), Dvorjak Stabat Mater (Liverpool Sinfonia), Mendelssohn Hear My Prayer (Leeds Festival Chorus), Mendelssohn Midsummer Nights Dream (Opera North), Mozart Concert Arias (Lakeland Sinfonia), Bach Cantatas (Opera North), Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony (Durham Cathedral), Bach B Minor Mass (Aberdeen Bach Choir).
Equally at home as a Recitalist Joanne’s recital for the Leeds Lieder Festival with leading accompanist Gary Matthewman won much acclaim.
As an exponent of Contemporary Music Joanne has had the pleasure of working with and performing works by Jonathan Dove, Cecilia McDowell, Andrew Carter and Andrew Bullard.
Broadcasts and Recordings as a soloist include “Masterclass” with Sir Thomas Allen (BBC), Leeds Lieder Recital (BBC Radiio 3), Messiah with Huddersfield and Halifax Choral Societies (BBC Radio),

Joanne has always enjoyed teaching and has been asked in the past to teach at Leeds University and also at Leeds College of Music for “Yorkshire Young Musicians”.
